vin diesel - stay (rihanna cover) [2013]

it seemed like people either found themselves deeply moved by this video or quickly laughed it off; i’m in the former camp. the thing is, i see this as a pretty accurate reflection of my relationship with music, which makes up a good amount of my time and my life, for that matter.

watching vin mess up the words as he attempts to mimic rihanna’s vocal feels all too familiar - not literally, but in spirit - and i easily see myself in him. usually, my listening time occurs alone in my room, playing something either through my laptop or my record player. i’m prone to flubbing lines at times; i’m only human. i mostly listen to female vocalists, and because of my voice, i sing along at an unattractive-sounding lower octave, sometimes raising up to the singer’s range when the music gives me enough life to do so (which is most of the time), and i can sound pretty silly at times as one would expect. but when i sing along, i tend to not hear myself. the point is that i don’t hear myself. i sing along to feel like i’m victoria legrand or beyonce or angel olsen, or in vin’s case, rihanna. by channeling their energy, it quickly alters my own. it’s a deeply symbiotic connection between the music and myself.

and yes, i understand why people have mocked this. because he is someone who initially developed a persona that, to some, may feel contrary to any ounce of vulnerability, the fact that this even exists in the first place feels understandably bizarre, but all of that goes away when i see him posted up against the wall as the video to “stay” is projected in his periphery and i hear the strikingly tender conviction that comes through in his voice. besides that, i can only see people laughing at this because it may hit too close to home, perhaps because moments like these are too painfully identifiable that the easiest way to react to it is to make fun of it. personally, i see someone fearless enough to share his solitary moments with the rest of the world, and i commend him for it.
